Y8: Week 5 | Oliver is Caught (twice!)

Tom Hardy as Bill Sikes (2007)
Hello Year 8,

Welcome back! Please start by watching this introductory message about your survey results and the plan going forward.

If you haven’t submitted your sample of work from last week, you can do so here.

On with the novel! We’ve reached a point where Oliver Twist is being innocently drawn towards a life of pickpocketing, thinking that his criminal training is nothing more than a strange game.

Below, you’ll find the lessons for this week. But first, here are some useful resources if you want to really push yourself and enjoy Oliver Twist in more detail:

An online copy of Oliver Twist, with audio recordings of each chapter so you can listen along.

pdf copy of Oliver Twist which you can download.

The BBC’s two-part adaptation of Oliver Twist on iPlayer (until the end of February)

We're now on Chapter 10 of the novel. Do let us know if you’re reading the whole thing!

Here are the lessons for this week. When you’ve completed a lesson, take one photo and keep hold of it until you share a sample of your work at the end of the week. Your teacher and Mrs Koczy and I will be checking that work has been completed – and if it’s not on Teams, it’s not done!

Lesson 1:

Do the next lesson on Oliver Twist from Oak National Academy: Oliver is Arrested

Optional extension task for lesson 1:

Watch this scene (watch for 5 minutes, until the end of the court scene) from the 2005 movie, Oliver Twist.

Lesson 2:

We’re going to skip an Oak lesson here. If you’re desperate to do it anyway as an extra, you can ask me for the link.

Instead, watch this short video which explains what happens next. (Feel free to speed me up!)

Then, do our next lesson on Oliver Twist from Oak National Academy: Oliver is Kidnapped

Optional extension task for lesson 2:

Watch this clip from the 2005 film, Oliver TwistWatch for 5 minutes, until the end of today’s extract, where Oliver is dragged back to Fagin.

Lesson 3:

Do the next lesson on Oliver Twist from Oak National Academy: Oliver Meets Bill

Optional extension task for lesson 3:

Watch this clip from the 2005 film, Oliver TwistEither:

  • watch for 2 minutes to see Oliver’s attempted escape, or
  • watch for 14 minutes until Bill takes Oliver out into the misty night.

That’s the end of this week’s work. Well done!

I’ll post this week’s assignment on Wednesday. I'll just ask you for a picture or two of your work from this week.

See you next Monday!

Mr M
