9B: Lesson 1 (2021) | 'The Tell-Tale Heart'

Happy New Year 9B,

Welcome back to Downstairs in H Block, the English Department’s Key Stage 3 blog! Unfortunately, it’s remote learning for the next half-term. We’re looking forward to seeing you all again at the end of this lockdown. Here’s our plan for the next few weeks:

  • we’ll try to get all Year 9 tutor groups up to the same place and make progress towards the end of the gothic unit
  • we carry on with our normal curriculum, using a range of resources, including lessons from Oak National Academy
  • we’ll send out work twice a week (this week, it will be on Tuesday and Thursday)
  • your teacher will be available to help if you need to get in touch with them
  • you should send your teacher pictures of your work

Let’s review where we are up to in our curriculum journey (click to enlarge):

9B have been particularly speedy with Frankenstein, so you’re going to read some gothic short stories while the other forms catch up. You’ll be using lesson resources from Oak National Academy.

Here’s your work for the first part of this week:

1) Write a title: The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

Add the date and make sure you underline. You can write on paper if you don’t have your book with you.

If you like, you can read this story before starting the lessons from Oak National. (The Oak lessons break the story up over 4 lessons, but the story itself is only a few pages long.) Alternatively, you can read it over the next four lessons with Miss Howell from Oak National Academy.

You can read it below or download a PDF:

Here’s another version of the same doc with further tasks and activities.

2) Do the first lesson on this story from Oak National Academy.

Make sure you pause the video to make notes. Please get in touch if you have any questions or problems.

If you’ve read the whole story and enjoyed it, take a look at this short, creepy animation by Annette Jung:

That’s it for today. We’ll be back on Thursday with another English lesson on The Tell-Tale Heart.

Remember to get in touch with your English teacher if you need any help with your remote learning.
