For 8B, 8N & 8S: Sidetrack - Extra stuff for 'Of Mice & Men'

Hello 8B, 8N and 8S,

This blogpost is just for you. It’s designed to give you some extra work to consolidate and develop what you already know about Of Mice and Men. 8D and 8W haven’t started the book yet so they will need a couple of weeks to catch up with you.

Here’s my understanding of where you were before the schools were closed:

  • 8B and 8N are halfway through Chapter 3.
  • 8S are part-way through Chapter 2.

So here’s what we advise you to do:

You should skim through each of the Year 8 blogposts in order to check your understanding, revise and consolidate your knowledge of the text. It would be a good idea to make notes on context (Week 1) and do the quizzes on chapters 1 & 2 when I publish the work on those chapters.

Then, have a go at some of the tasks below over the next few weeks:

1) THE STORY SO FAR…

Either:

a) Fill in this table for Chapters 1 & 2 – you can download and add to the doc, or print it out.

or

b) Storyboard the plot so far:

I’d probably go for option A, as it will be quicker and you can keep adding to it later, but do B if you fancy it.

2) CHAPTER RECAP QUESTIONS…

Have a go at these (again, download and add your answers – or print):

3) CREATIVE WRITING…

Have a go at this short descriptive task (obviously, base it on your home/garden rather than school):

OPTIONAL EXTRA - THE CHARACTERS ON THE RANCH…

If you want some more work to do, and if you haven’t done something like this already, you can download and fill in this table (or just make your own):

OPTIONAL EXTRA CHALLENGE:

Watch the first five videos on this online course of lectures on MASSOLIT.

Finally, some Quizlet revision:

In a few weeks, when 8D and 8W get to Chapter 3 (or Chapter 2 if you’re in 8S) you can carry on with reading a chapter a week.

I hope this makes sense. If you have any questions, leave a comment below or feel free to email me (Mr Muralee) or your teacher.

In the meantime, stay safe!
