Well, we’re almost at the end of the school year and we’ve
now finished Of Mice and Men.
Congratulations!
To finish off the year, I’m going to set you a SUMMER
READING CHALLENGE.
There’s loads of evidence to say that reading novels,
especially challenging novels, has a huge impact on students’ performance in
school, even in other subjects like Maths. And even though there have been lots
of stories in the news about the educational impact of the lockdown, we firmly
believe that you will still be making progress if you are reading. If you don’t
believe me, have a look at this
and this.
So, here’s what we’re asking you to do:
Read one or more challenging novels during your last weeks
of Year 8 – and even better, push on and
read more during the summer!
To help you, we’re providing a
reading list, texts and resources (see below).
When you finish a book, let us
know about it by writing a short review on this Google Form. That’s it!
Here are some ideas to get you started:
1) Have another look at this reading
list from last week’s powerpoint:
2) Have a look at this poster: 100 books to read before you leave secondary school.
3) Based on the above poster, I’ve
selected some classic, challenging texts which are available to read for free.
For each text, you’ll find some introductory information, the text itself, and
a study guide to help you if you get stuck. Click INFO for a brief introduction
to the text. Have a browse!
Of course, if there are other books that you wish to read, you can do that too. Happy reading!
Don’t forget to let us know
what you’ve read and how you found it by filling in the Review Form.
There won’t be a new blogpost
next week (unless I think of something else) so, from everyone in the English
Department, have a great summer!
Stay safe,
THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
